When my two (almost two year old) boys woke up cranky and fussy this morning I did what any good mom would do…I turned on an episode of “The Backyardigans“. Now before you go shaking your head at me you should know that I also have a 3 month old daughter who was fussing for her bottle. You don’t need to tell me that “fixing” my current situation with the television is teaching my children bad habits…they already go press the buttons on the television if mommy or daddy is watching something other than a cartoon (which, might I add, is rare). It’s just that it’s easy. And for a mom of 3 under 2, few things are easy. When this episode is over, okay when the next episode is over, I will cut it off and spend time playing and cuddling with them. In the meantime I will feed Taylor, fix myself and the boys breakfast, put on a load of laundry, and make beds. And I am able to get all of this done in the first 45 minutes of my day in thanks to the Backyardigans.
As I work I can hear Uniqua, Pablo, and Tyrone singing “Nothing’s too tough! Nothing’s too tough! Nothing’s too tough for us, no situation’s gonna make us fuss. Nothing’s too tough, nothing’s too tough for us.” I agree! With the help of the Backyardigan’s, no situation is too tough. Two cranky boys…no problem. A hungry infant…not an issue. Beds to make, chores to do…go ahead, get it done. I needed someone to entertain Isaac and Aaron while I tended to Taylor and breakfast. And they are there to “Save the Day!”
Isn’t that what we are suppose to be to one another? A helping hand. Meeting one another’s needs, whatever those needs may be. It is in fact the way the new testament church worked. [“Selling their possessions and goods, they gave to anyone as he had need.” Acts 2:45] This is what it means to be the church, to be a family, to truly see other believers as sisters and brothers.
I have two sisters, by birth, and if they were in need I would do whatever was in my power to do to meet their needs. Yet last night I found out that my brother, in the Lord, has been living without electricity. How could I be so unaware of the needs in my very own family?
What happens when we start seeing the needs in our family and meeting them. Your only car not running…here have mine, we have two. Need someplace to stay…welcome. Air conditioner not working…I know how to fix that. Need some alone time with your husband…bring me your children. [“A new command I give you; love one another. As I have loved you, so you must love one another. By this all men will know that you are my disciples, if you love one another.” John 13:34-35] Want to show the world Jesus…love each other!
I have seen these things begin to happen among believers. If we want to turn this world upside down, we must give more and increasingly more of ourselves and what we have been given, whatever that may be.
It is my heart’s desire to become a Backyardigan. To be a helper. To proclaim that there is “nothing too tough for us”… if we come together and are obedient to the call God has placed on us to meet the needs of those in our midst. To let Him use me to “Save the Day!”
